Edmond de Rothschild and Macif take line honours in the Artemis Challenge (ITW)

The seventh edition of the Artemis Challenge at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week this year undoubtedly boasts its most prestigious line-up of offshore racing superstars – François Gabart, Michel Desjoyeaux, Alex Thomson, Dee Caffari, Vincent Riou, Jean Le Cam, Seb Josse, Brian Thompson, Sidney Gavignet – to name a few. The fleet of two huge multihulls and six IMOCA 60 monohulls today raced in The Solent in a tightly fought battle to claim their share of the £10,000 charity prize fund.

Stars ready for the Artemis Challenge at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week !

Some of the biggest names in offshore ocean racing are gearing up to take on the Isle of Wight in the 2013 Artemis Challenge at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week on August 8th. The fleet boasts some of the most experienced big boat sailing stars from the UK and France. And they will be joined by a number of VIP guests as they bid to claim £10,000 for their nominated charities. While the 2012 race saw Michel Desjoyeaux set a new world record onboard his MOD70 Foncia for circumnavigating the Isle of Wight, the forecast for Thursday suggests a challenge to the record is unlikely. But it won’t stop these sailing greats pulling out all the stops to be first across the finish line.

MOD70 Foncia and Oman Sail break the Record in the Artemis Challenge

The Artemis Challenge proved to be a record breaking* race around the Island for the MOD70s Foncia and Musandam-OmanSail today. Race management yesterday made a last minute change to the sailing instructions to allow the MOD70s to race for the record, due to the strong weather forecast. Starting at 10:00 BST, on Ladies Day at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, it took Foncia only 2 hours, 21 minutes, 25 seconds to round the Isle of Wight, breaking the current record by over ten minutes. Close racing between the trimarans meant Musandam-OmanSail finished a mere 1 minute and 28 seconds behind their French competitor.

MOD70 and Imoca race for charity in the Artemis Challenge

The sixth edition of the Artemis Challenge at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week will see two MOD 70 foot multihulls and two IMOCA Open 60 monohulls race around the Isle of Wight on Thursday, 16th August, and all for a good cause. Some of the biggest names in offshore racing will compete in this unique charity race alongside some of Britain’s best Olympic sailors and a few ‘famous faces’ to claim £12,000 for their nominated charities.

The multihull teams will consist of French offshore legend Michel Desjoyeaux onboard his MOD 70 Foncia and Musandam-Oman Sail, with fellow French sailing star Sidney Gavignet. The IMOCA Open 60 teams will see two Olympic British sailors sharing the helm of Artemis Ocean Racing II. British Vendée Globe hero Mike Golding will line-up on the Royal Yacht Squadron start line on board his IMOCA 60 Gamesa, assisted by two more British Olympic sailing personalitites.

Figaro / British Sailors Can Shine on the Short-handed Figaro Circuit

British sailors are beginning to turn a few heads in the short-handed Figaro world by producing some exceptional early season results in this highly competitive class. The Figaro class is considered by many as the essential stepping-stone to a successful solo sailing career – with the Vendée Globe as the ultimate goal. The uniqueness of this class sees the seasoned professionals return year on year to sharpen their skills against the new ‘young guns’ on the circuit. This season will see a trio of UK entrants, competing in what has always been a French dominated domain. This monthly newsletter will follow the experiences of the UK entrants this summer as they continue to learn and gain experience so they can ultimately follow in the footsteps of the UK’s most famous solo sailors…

Two Figaro calendars run concurrently through 2011 – one unofficial including the Solo Basse Normandie and the Transmanche and the ‘official’ calendar where points count towards the annual Figaro Champions de France. The highlight of the official calendar is the Soliaire du Figaro that in August attracts top level professional and ‘rookie’ sailors alike to compete on the same playing field in this one design class.

Extreme Sailing Series / The Gloves Are Off In Qingdao

The dramatic city landscape of Qingdao provided the backdrop for Day 1 of the Extreme Sailing Series™ Qingdao, Act 2 of the 2011 global tour. The horseshoe shaped Fushan Bay is home to the Extreme 40 fleet for the next five days surrounded by high-rise buildings of this huge industrial city, which is China's fourth largest manufacturing port also known as the 'City of Sails'.

Qingdao hosted the Olympic sailing events of the 2008 Beijing Games in addition to being a stopover port for both the Volvo Ocean Race and the Clipper Race but the people of Qingdao haven’t seen anything like the Extreme 40s before and although these first two days are non-public days, hundreds of public gathered along the huge pedestrian breakwater to see first-hand the boats in race mode.

Artemis Ocean Racing breaks the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race IMOCA 60 record

Having crossed the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race finish line today (Monday 30th August) at 00h32’ 27’’ after 6 days 10 hours 32 minutes and 27 seconds at sea, Artemis Ocean Racing II managed to break the IMOCA 60 course record at the end of an “epic day of full-on sailing”, as Jonny Malbon said upon setting foot ashore.

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race is special for Artemis Ocean Racing, as its 2006 edition was the first event the team’s first IMOCA 60 (ex-Hexagon, later known as Artemis I) took part in - and incidentally won, with Jonny Malbon at the helm. And despite the “domestic” feel evoked by its course and appellation, it’s a gruelling competition with 1802 nautical miles to cover - that’s more than half of a transatlantic crossing - on a course that takes the sailors to the loneliness, the cold and the desolation of the Northern Hemisphere’s high latitudes.

Mike Golding Wins The Artemis Challenge

Mike Golding has won the Artemis Challenge 2010 claiming the £10,000 charitable donation for the RNLI. The six round-the-world IMOCA 60 racers started the fourth consecutive Artemis Challenge at Cowes Week at 1000 BST today [Tuesday, 3rd August]. Joining the renowned round the world skippers were sporting stars Zara Phillips, Amy Williams, GMTV presenter Emma Crosby and former England rugby international Martin Bayfield as well as the Harry Potter ‘Weasley Twins’, James and Oliver Phelps.

Zara Phillips, racing onboard Artemis Ocean Racing, that finished 3rd overall said at the finish: “There was a really good atmosphere on board, we had a good team and we all worked really well together - it was easy for us as the crew know the boat so well. It’s great to finish on the podium but we thought that because it’s the Artemis Challenge and we’re on Artemis Ocean Racing so we thought let the others get in front!”
