AC35 / Burling punches ticket to the America’s Cup against ORACLE TEAM USA

Peter Burling’s Emirates Team New Zealand has earned a rematch against ORACLE TEAM USA for the 35th America’s Cup.

It was a nerve-wracking afternoon for New Zealand fans, who saw the first attempt at sailing race seven abandoned when the wind died. But 10 minutes before the last possible starting time for racing, Regatta Director Iain Murray determined the wind had built enough to conduct a fair race.

At the conclusion of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers on Saturday, Emirates Team New Zealand finished second in the final standings, one point behind eventual winners ORACLE TEAM USA. Emirates Team New Zealand have decided to take on Land Rover BAR as their opposition in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs semi-finals, which start Sunday.

America's Cup / 35th America’s Cup Opening Day Weather Forecast

The America’s Cup Village is ready, the teams are prepared and excitement is building for the eagerly anticipated start of the 35th America’s Cup. The weather has been excellent this week, and is forecast to remain good on Saturday (27th May) and next week, however the current forecast for Friday 26th May is showing wind levels gusting above 30 knots in the afternoon. Whilst the wind may drop within the raceable limits of 6-24 knots later in the evening, the safety of both the sailors and spectators is always paramount, and a decision whether to open the America’s Cup Village or not will be taken accordingly.

America's Cup / Artemis Racing’s development boat (AC45 Turbo) sustained beam damage whilst training

During Tuesday’s practice session, the Artemis Turbo AC45 (T2) suffered platform damage which lead to the wing falling into the water. No one was injured. The wing, one of their ACC wings, sustained minimal damage, and only the tip of the wing touched the water.

At 02:59 BST this morning, British solo skipper Sam Matson (Artemis 21) surfed into Roscoff, France under a moonlit sky to finish the second leg of the Solitaire du Figaro 18th overall and third Rookie. Having raced two of the four legs that make up the full 2014 mile Solitaire course, Sam maintains his overall Rookie lead by 18 minutes and 14 seconds and sits an impressive 14th overall on the Solitaire du Figaro leaderboard after two legs.

Artemis Racing had hoped to launch and christen its AC72 in San Francisco on Thursday, but pushed the planned ceremony back after the team ‘heard noises’ when loading up the boat.

Figaro / Artemis Offshore Academy sailors lineup for the Solitaire du Figaro

This weekend kick started the 2012 Solitaire du Figaro with a blustery 17-mile prologue coastal race off Paimpol, France with all 37 single-handed skippers competing. Artemis Offshore Academy sailors Sam Goodchild, Nick Cherry and Henry Bomby are the only Brits in the race. Recently selected to compete Henry Bomby displayed promise with a 12th place overall finish in 40+ knot winds and was the first ‘rookie’ (never raced a Solitiaire before) to finish, while Goodchild and Cherry joined eight other skippers to retire. Leg one of the race starts from Paimpol on the 24th June and will see the sailors race the longest of the three legs at 504 miles to Gijion, Spain.

Nick Cherry and Sam Goodchild aboard Artemis, are currently holding the most southerly position in the Transat AG2R La Mondiale fleet. Taking a gamble on a less direct route to St Barths, the co-skippers hope that the northerly boats led by Nacarat and Cercle Vert will be slowed by the light airs of a high pressure weather system, meaning their southerly route through the gusty trade winds will prevail.

Figaro / Sam Goodchild (Artemis) :"We are working hard to keep up the pace"

This morning Goodchild and Cherry continue to push southwest with the fleet in the hope of avoiding the light winds of an unusually far south Azores high pressure. Artemis remains in touch with the leading pack and is currently in 10th place, sandwiched between the current race leaders to their west-northwest and a competitive group of four boats playing the left side of the course to the south.
