ExSS / Extreme Sailing Series™ Florianópolis stadium delivers ‘best racing of the year’ on opening day

The opening day of Act 8 Florianópolis presented by Land Rover delivered the “best racing of the year” according to Alinghi helmsman Morgan Larson & SAP Extreme Sailing Team skipper Jes Gram-Hansen. The final showdown of the 2013 Series began in style, and the South Brazilian city welcomed the eight elite level Extreme 40 teams with champagne sailing conditions – 14 knots of wind that steadily built to 20 and a brilliant Brazilian sunshine. Eight short, sharp, fast paced races were sailed, with four different race winners and Oman’s The Wave, Muscat blasted round the tight courses, reaching speeds of 24 knots and relishing the conditions that put Leigh McMillan’s men at the top of the rankings at the end of day one. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Brazil when the event officially opens to the public, and with the breeze set to build to 30 knots overnight, they will be in for a show they wont easily forget!

Extreme Sailing Series / Roman Hagara and Red Bull lead going into final day : "This team deserve to win"

If yesterday’s racing was all about the new talent, todays was about experience with the established teams using their knowledge of the short stadium style race courses to make the most of the light winds at the Extreme Sailing Series in Muscat, Oman. As the stage is set for the final day, the battle has a familiar mix of Red Bull Sailing Team, The Wave, Muscat and Alinghi who are vying for points at the top of the Act 1 leaderboard but it was Austria’s double Olympic winning light air specialist Roman Hagara who was the man of match, with four race wins for Red Bull Sailing Team which could have set his team on a course for their first ever Act win.

ExSS / The Wave Muscat take Act and season 2012, Mc Millan "over the moon" (Video)

The most closely contested finish ever in the six-year history of the Extreme Sailing Series, today saw The Wave, Muscat clinch the final Act victory in Rio de Janeiro by the smallest of margins – just 0.2 points ahead of the French Groupe Edmond de Rothschild. Comfortable going into the final double points race of his Series victory, winning the Act was the challenge and an ecstatic and somewhat shell-shocked McMillan was almost speechless after racing.

ExSS / ‘Severe damage’ to Series leader The Wave, Muscat who are in a race against the clock to get back on

It was a full pressure day at the Extreme Sailing Series in Nice, France, as the gusty conditions, short courses and reaching starts tested some of the world’s best sailors to their limits – including current Series leader Leigh McMillan whose team The Wave, Muscat found themselves limping back to port after a collision on the start line in the final race of the day with Alinghi and Red Bull Sailing Team. The crash, which could be heard by the gathering spectators on shore at the Promenade des Anglais, also left the Austrians out of racing and both teams have a long night of repairs ahead to be back on the water tomorrow.
