ExSS / Alinghi pull off incredible comeback to take Act 6 in Madeira

Swiss team Alinghi came back from a dismasting to win Act 6 of the Extreme Sailing Series™ in extraordinary circumstances on the waters of Portugal’s Madeira Islands.

A high-speed collision with Red Bull Sailing Team yesterday resulted in the 16.5-metre mast of Alinghi’s GC32 catamaran falling down. The damage, in the third race of the day, forced the veteran crew to retire from the remaining four races and threatened to keep them off the water for the final day of Act 6.

Alinghi takes off in 2015 "The GC32, as with the D35 and the X40, is a strict one-design class"

Alinghi, created by Ernesto Bertarelli, won the America’s Cup in 2003 in Auckland under the colors of the Société Nautique de Genève. In doing so, it set a double precedent in the history of the world’s oldest sports’ trophy: A first victory at a first attempt; and the first “European” team to bring the “Auld Mug” back to the continent since the first competition in 1851.

#ExSS / "We’ve had an amazing season with an amazing team" Morgan Larson and Alinghi win the season and the Act

It is mission accomplished for Ernesto Bertarelli’s Swiss team Alinghi, as Morgan Larson and the team grabbed victory with both hands at Act 8 Sydney, presented by Land Rover, and with it the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series™ title – and Larson’s words say it all: “We’ve had an amazing season with an amazing team. To win the season and the Act on the last day in the conditions we had here in Sydney is a special moment that’s going to take a long time to sink in. The level of confidence that we have on our boat just made me realise I can win anything with these guys. This is the best feeling I’ve had all year and probably in the whole of my sailing career, so I’m going to cherish it.

#ExSS / Dean Barker breaks Alinghi and The Wave, Muscat’s dominance (Images)

In some of the best conditions the fleet have raced in all year, you couldn’t have scripted a better final to the Extreme Sailing Series™ Act 6 in Istanbul, and the fans on shore and following around the world were rewarded with a nail bitingly close, down to the wire shoot out after 31 races.

#ExSS / Groupama 40 and Alinghi dismasted in Istanbul today

In an unprecedented opening day at the Extreme Sailing Series™ Act 6 in Istanbul, the public and national media witnessed some extraordinary adrenaline fueled racing, with every team pushing hard – and at times too hard, with two boats dismasting; first Groupama sailing team and then Alinghi. In near perfect sailing conditions that topped out at 20 knots, the French, with too much load on their rig at the windward mark, were the first to lose their new mast during race four, which disappointingly for the French came after their best start to an event this year.

In a completely unrelated incident in the seventh and final race of the day, Alinghi suffered the same fate, with both boats now out of the water and with a long night in the pitlane to be back on the water tomorrow.

#EXSS / Victory for @alinghiteam in Singapore, The Wave Muscat second and Realstone third

We couldn’t have dreamed for a better start,” commented skipper Larson after racing. “It was challenging here and with the level of competition a couple of notches higher this season - I think we just carried on from last year and we’re the only team that hasn’t changed any of our crew. We will try and build on from last year and enjoy this victory!”

Extreme Sailing Series / Red Bull lose Act 1, The Wave, Muscat clinches victory

It may not have been high speed racing on the final day of the Extreme Sailing Series opening Act in Muscat, Oman, today but it was as tense as it gets, and in classic Extreme Sailing Series style, it came down to the final race for the winner to be decided. Defending champion Leigh McMillan and his team on The Wave, Muscat sailed a picture perfect day coming back from a 15 point deficit to Red Bull Sailing Team to claim overall victory, in the closest possible finish on their home turf.

Extreme Sailing Series / Roman Hagara and Red Bull lead going into final day : "This team deserve to win"

If yesterday’s racing was all about the new talent, todays was about experience with the established teams using their knowledge of the short stadium style race courses to make the most of the light winds at the Extreme Sailing Series in Muscat, Oman. As the stage is set for the final day, the battle has a familiar mix of Red Bull Sailing Team, The Wave, Muscat and Alinghi who are vying for points at the top of the Act 1 leaderboard but it was Austria’s double Olympic winning light air specialist Roman Hagara who was the man of match, with four race wins for Red Bull Sailing Team which could have set his team on a course for their first ever Act win.

ExSS / The Wave Muscat take Act and season 2012, Mc Millan "over the moon" (Video)

The most closely contested finish ever in the six-year history of the Extreme Sailing Series, today saw The Wave, Muscat clinch the final Act victory in Rio de Janeiro by the smallest of margins – just 0.2 points ahead of the French Groupe Edmond de Rothschild. Comfortable going into the final double points race of his Series victory, winning the Act was the challenge and an ecstatic and somewhat shell-shocked McMillan was almost speechless after racing.
