The Volvo Ocean Race today launches a formal tender process for the design of the trophy that will be held aloft by the winning crew of the 2011-12 event.
The race organisation invites applications from designers and agencies to come up with a creation that encompasses the spirt and heritage of one of the world's most gruelling sporting contests.
During its 37-year history, 148 teams have crossed the starting line of what is now and has been for three events, the Volvo Ocean Race, the most famous of round the world races. Many sailors return five, six, seven times, for the battle with mother nature and their illustrious professional rivals.
The prize at the end of over 39,000 nautical miles of the planet's most hostile oceans is the coveted trophy itself - and bragging rights among their peers - at the end of nine legs and 10 in-port races in July 2012.
Not only will the trophy be awarded to the overall winner of the 2011-12 race, it will make its own special around the world 'trophy tour'. Its final resting place will be in the museum at Race Headquarters in Alicante Spain, where it will be on permanent display.
