VOR / Rugby World Cup rivalries: sailing with the enemy

New Zealand sailor Brad Marsh is feeling slightly uneasy as the lone Kiwi among France’s Volvo Ocean Race entry Groupama sailing team ahead of the Rugby World Cup final tomorrow.

Top of the list of possible punishments is the modern day version of walking the plank, with Marsh expecting his teammates to send him to the bow of the state-of-the-art 70-foot racing yacht as it smashes through waves at high speed.

The French rugby team are our Achilles' heel,” Marsh said. “The last time we lost an international game at Eden Park was 1994 an that was against a French side.

“But we have form. I guess you could say we’re the favourites, so I feel confident that we’ll get through the final and win it.

“When the All Blacks win the team will push me away to the front of the boat and bury me under the waves.’’

Young French sailor Sebastien Marsset, 26, said silencing a gloating Kiwi would be a priority for the French team should things go against them on Sunday.

“I hope for sure we’re going to win, because if we don’t Brad is going to talk too much I think,’’ he said.

Taking time out to watch the World Cup final is one of the final moments of downtime for the 11 crewmen on board each of the six yachts competing in the 2011-12 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The 39,000 nautical mile race through four of the world’s most hostile oceans and five continents will begin in Alicante, Spain on October 29.
