VOR / Mike Pammenter dangles off CAMPER to remove rope (video)

CAMPER bowman Mike Pammenter performed a daring fix dangling over the side of the boat after using the latest in camera technology to identify a problem with one of the daggerboard cases.

Pammenter attached a tiny high definition waterproof GoPro HD Hero camera to a pole before lowering it over the side of CAMPER as she blasted along through the South China Sea.

The footage shot on the GoPro showed a piece of rope stuck to the daggerboard casing – and quickly a plan to remove the offending article was hatched.

We’ll slow the boat up, drop the keel down so the boat heels over and throw Mike over the side on a halyard,” skipper Chris Nicholson said.

We’ll either cut the rope away or try to tear it out, and continue on. It’ll slow us down for about two minutes and then away we go.

With Rob Salthouse behind the wheel and Daryl Wislang making sure the halyard didn’t damage the boat, Pammenter was lowered to just inches above the water where he was able to cut the rope free.

“I think we got most of it,” the 28-year-old South African said after he was hauled back on board.

We’ll have to put the board up and down a few times to check but I think it went pretty well.
