VOR / Chris Nicholson : "We’ll bounce back, we really will"

Just six days remain until the re-start for Leg 5; a punishing 6.705 mile leg to Itajai in Brazil during which the crews will battle the Southern Ocean and round the infamous Cape Horn. Past stopovers have allowed the crews and shore team the luxury of ten days or more to recover and prepare, but there is no such luxury here in Auckland.

Twenty four hours after arriving to a rapturous welcome in Auckland, the CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand team are now in a race to get the boat and crew prepared for the In Port racing this weekend.
It’s a tight runaround for everyone,” commented CAMPER shore manager Neil Cox. “We knew time would be short in Auckland so we did a lot of work in Sanya that we knew we couldn’t get done here. The job list isn’t too bad, but we are fortunate to have the facilities here at the Emirates Team New Zealand base. The boat is already out of the water and in the shed, we have the full sail loft here at the base so we’re lucky to be able to work inside over the next few days, especially as the weather hasn’t been too kind to us here! The biggest issue we had was with the J2, so that’s being worked on but otherwise it’s your standard job list after twenty plus days at sea."

For the crew, a few nights remain on land, the washing machines have been on overdrive dealing with the mountain of kit that need to be washed, resealed and packed and, with such a tight schedule, just one day off can be expected before the team start to focus on the next leg.

For CAMPER yesterday’s welcome into the City of Sails was a moment to remember, the nail biting finish which saw the battle for third place come down to 93 seconds after over 5000 miles of racing. It was a tough pill to swallow for the CAMPER crew but, with more than half the points for the entire race still up for grabs, this competition is anything but over and the next leg could well be a proving point for many.
Each place is dearly contested in this race and you have to fight for all of them. The boat is in good shape, the crew are a little battered and bruised, probably more mentally from the finish yesterday, but we’ll bounce back, we really will. It will take a tough team to shape up in seven days time to go into the Southern Ocean, after doing a ProAm, after doing an InPort and after repairing your boat and your body. It will take a special team, so, watch us," commented skipper Chris Nicholson.
