In the build-up to Mike Golding’s November Vendée Globe start, the Southampton-based skipper has officially entered his IMOCA 60, Gamesa, into the 2012 J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. The annual race, organised by the Island Sailing Club, is a one-day yacht race around the Isle of Wight.

Regularly attracting over 1,700 boats and around 16,000 sailors, it is one of the largest yacht races in the world and the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK after the London Marathon and the great North and South runs.
Golding, who first competed in the race in 1991, said, “The J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race is perfect training in this Vendée Globe year. The tight course means I will have to go through a lot of manoeuvres during the 50 nautical mile course and will be a great opportunity to really stretch Gamesa’s legs competitively on home waters.”

The race, on Saturday 30 June, starts on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes and races westabout, to The Needles, round St Catherine’s Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy, and back into the Solent to the finish line at Cowes.
