The chase for the prestigious Inmarsat Media Crew Member Award is going down to the wire – just like the Volvo Ocean Race itself.
Since the 2011-12 edition began way back in October last year in Alicante, our judges have pored over all the daily multi-media content sent to our HQ in Spain from the six MCMs.
After each leg, they have had the unenviable task of rating each boat’s media output before awarding a prize for each stage based on the best video photo, audio and text material delivered.
With the final sprint from Lorient to Galway to go starting on Sunday, there’s still all to play for with three of our MCMs – Hamish Hooper (CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, Yann Riou (Groupama sailing team) and Amory Ross (PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG) – boasting two wins apiece after seven legs.
The trio missed out in Lisbon when Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s Nick Dana scooped the Leg 7 prize, but they are all back with nominations for the stage from Portugal to France after one of the most dramatic stretches of sailing in the entire Race.
One of the judges, Chris McLaughlin, vice-president external affairs for Inmarsat, summed up: "The MCM prize mirrors the performance of the 2011-12 fleet.
“Nominations again for PUMA, CAMPER and Groupama put all three MCMs in with a realistic chance to win the overall Inmarsat trophy.
“The judging panel has been impressed by the advances in storytelling using FleetBroadband technology.
“Professional offshore racing has been changed forever. Future VOR entries will put as much effort into selecting their MCM as their navigator, or bowman. Sponsors will demand nothing less.”
Our linked video shows one of the video highlights of Leg 8 with CAMPER skipper Chris Nicholson being washed off his feet by a giant wave in the North Atlantic.
The winner of Leg 8 will be announced at Thursday’s gala prize dinner in Lorient with the overall prize - worth 10,000 euros to the victor - declared on the grand prize-giving night in Galway on July 7.
