Fresh from winning the Volvo Ocean Race for the first time, French sailor and skipper of Groupama 4 Franck Cammas will make a special appearance at the Haute Route Alps, the World’s Toughest and Highest cyclosportive. Joining the peloton for Stage 3 of the 7-day event, Cammas will take on a punishing 138km and 4700m of ascent between Courchevel and Alpe d’Huez on Tuesday 21st August 2012.
“I love road biking in the mountains, and the Haute Route has all the ingredients,” Cammas explains, “Unfortunately I cannot do the whole event, but even doing this one long stage will be a big mental and physical challenge. I got back into cycling two years ago, but having only finished the Volvo Ocean Race last month, I haven’t got much power in my legs for the big climbs. I have tried to fit in some training, in Bretagne and I’m now in Corsica, which is superb.”
The Marathon Stage between Courchevel and Alpe d’Huez on the third day of the Haute Route Alps will be a challenge for all 600 riders in the peloton. It’s the hardest mountain stage on the event, which tackles the Col de la Madeleine, Col du Glandon and a final ascent to Alpe d’Huez with gradients of up to 14% to contend with along the course. Determination and the ability to dig deep on tough climbs will be essential as Cammas and the rest of the Haute Route riders are pushed to limit of physical endurance.
The 2nd edition of the Haute Route Alps begins on Sunday 19th August in Geneva covering 780km in 7 timed stages and 21,000m of ascent across some of cycling’s most legendary Alpine cols. 600 riders will aim to complete the World’s Toughest and Highest cyclosportive and reach the finish on the mythical Promenade des Anglais in Nice on Saturday 25th August.
