Aspiring members of SCA's all-female crew for 2014-15 will begin training on one of the fastest boats from the last edition, after the team acquired PUMA's Mar Mostro to give their campaign a boost before their one-design Volvo Ocean 65 is ready to sail.
The PUMA boat, sailed by Ken Read's team to third place overall in the 2011-12 edition, is now in the United Kingdom undergoing a face lift for SCA, with the first set of candidates due to start sailing in February.
“While we wait for the delivery of our race boat, scheduled to be delivered in the Autumn of 2013, we have acquired a top-notch training boat to begin our team preparations," said Richard Brisius, Managing Director of Team SCA. "We have bought the Volvo Open 70 PUMA, which came third in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012."
The target for Brisius is to get a strong basis for the team established by the middle of 2013 – well over a year before the start of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante, Spain.
"Right now we are putting together a group of crew candidates," Brisius explained. "It is very exciting work and we have been in contact with many interesting, experienced and qualified female sailors from around the world.
"We hope to have the first group of sailors ready for our team towards the end of the first quarter of 2013. From there, we will continue to build and our plan is to have most of the crew ready to go during the summer of 2013."
