Britain's Ocean City, Plymouth, has won the bid to host the start of the next edition of The Transat in 2020.

The Transat / Loïck Peyron’s tribute to Tabarly is cut short

Today Loïck Peyron, skipper of Pen Duick II, informed The Transat bakerly Race Management that his nostalgic voyage from Plymouth to New York had come to an end following damage to his staysail which has torn off the bridge of his boat.

Ultim / Francois Gabart takes line honours in The Transat bakerly 2016 and wins the Ultime class

Francois Gabart, the young heart-throb of French solo offshore sailing, completed his first solo win on board his new 100ft trimaran, Macif, today when he crossed the finish line of The Transat bakerly off New York.

BLUE, Blue Marine Foundation named as official race charity for The Transat 2016

The Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE), a UK-registered charity dedicated to tackling the acute problem of over-fishing in the world’s oceans, is today announced as the official race charity of The Transat, 2016.

The charity was set up in 2010 by some of the team behind the award-winning film “The End of The Line” that dramatically set out the crisis facing the world’s oceans.

New entrants boost growing field for the 2016 edition of The Transat

With the closing date for entries to the 2016 edition of The Transat fast approaching, three new skippers have added their names to the starting roster.

In the competitive Class40 fleet, French skipper Vincent Lantin will take part on board ‘Le slip français’, while fellow Frenchman Erik Nigon on ‘Vers un monde sans sida’ will join the now five-strong Multi50 fleet.

The 2016 edition of The Transat, the 3,000-mile solo transatlantic classic from Plymouth in the UK to New York City, will feature some of the top names in world professional solo ocean racing.

Fifty years on from Eric Tabarly’s historic 1964 victory, two years until the next edition of The Transat starting May 2016

This Sunday, 18th May the Eric Tabarly Museum in Lorient, France will be hosting a day of celebrations to mark the occasion of Eric Tabarly’s participation and historic win in the 1964 solo transatlantic race, then known as the OSTAR. With only two years to go to the next edition of this famous race, now known as The Transat since 2004, it is fitting that Tabarly’s victory acts as a reminder of all that is great about this legendary race. The racing boats may have changed beyond all recognition in fifty years, but the essence of solo pioneering spirit, courage and determination remain the same today…

Host Cities (start and finish) Bid Process for The Transat 2016 will open in January

The next edition of The Transat, the original solo race across the North Atlantic that was born as the OSTAR, will start in its historical time slot in May 2016 from the UK to North America. Start and Finish Host Cities will be invited in January to put their case forward for hosting this event that is both steeped in history, and that helped create a sector of sailing that is now one of the major forces in the professional sport.

Traditionally, The Transat has started from the iconic sea-faring port of Plymouth in the UK and finished in the USA. In New York in the first edition in 1960, then Newport, Rhode Island in the intervening years, before Boston became the arrival port in the last two editions in 2004 and 2008.

Next edition of THE TRANSAT planned for May 2016

The next edition of THE TRANSAT, the successor for pro-sailors to the original solo race across the North Atlantic that was born as the OSTAR, will take place in May 2016. As we wish the sailors good luck for the start of the Corinthian version for smaller boats this Bank Holiday Monday, 27th May from Plymouth, UK, this serves as a timely reminder to establish a marker for the The Transat, or La Transat Anglaise as its known in France.

IMOCA / OC ThirdPole postpone The Transat™ 2012

The oldest solo ocean race of them all, The Transat™, born as the OSTAR in 1960, has been rescheduled away from its habitual 2012 slot. The event has been organised every four years since its inception, and has been the breeding ground for both technology like the multihull itself, and the heroes that have made the sport what it is today, such as French legend Eric Tabarly. Rescued at the last minute for the 2004 edition by OC ThirdPole, in 2008 the event became a monohull only race with a strong commitment made to the 60-foot monohull IMOCA Class, with the exclusion of all multihulls. With Artemis as title sponsor, the event was a great success and in particular a real result for sailing in the UK with a very well attended pre-start village in Plymouth, the historical ‘home’ of the event.
