“We are on great form and getting ready for the Monsoon Cup. We just organised a team meeting in St-Malo, during the start of the Route du Rhum. We will then train in Brittany with Damien Iehl’s team, before competing in the Sunseeker Australia Cup. Finally, we will then fly to Malaysia, for what is our season’s main objective: the Monsoon Cup.
“Our goal in Malaysia is obviously victory. We’ve had a great season, with three victories and five podiums and we’ve been leading the world ranking throughout the year so yes, our goal is definitely to win. This title is very dear to us.
“Winning the World Match Racing Tour will obviously be very difficult: our opponents are great sailors and they are pushing hard. We currently sit 15 points ahead of Minoprio and 17 points ahead of Ainslie, which is great but not comfortable because a lot of points will be at stake during the Monsoon Cup. We are not in a position to start calculating - we must get a good result and do our best to win.
“Our principal challengers are Adam Minoprio and Ben Ainslie’s teams. Both Minoprio and Ainslie are fantastic sailors. Adam is young, casual and hugely talented. Ainslie is a proven talent, his list of achievements is incredible and his team’s experience is just amazing; however he is not always consistent. The ball is now in our camp and it is our duty to get the job done!”
With the Monsoon Cup offering 1.5 times more points than a standard WMRT race, the championship is still wide open and the script could not have been written better for what is set to be an exhilarating climax to the year in Terengganu from 30th November to 5th December. The Monsoon Cup will see the winner scoop 38 points, with the remaining points breakdown as follows: 30 (2nd), 22 (3rd), 18 (4th), 15 (5th), 12 (6th), 9 (7th), 6 (8th).
Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team and Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar are fourth and fifth in the series and still in with a mathematical chance of winning but will need results of their opponents at the Monsoon Cup to go their way.
