The night has seen some position changes with Groupama 3 taking the lead in the Ultimate Class, and Oman Air Majan has moved to third. As the more southerly boats stay hooked into the Trade Winds the positions will continue to shift, and they will make some immediate gains. But Sidney is sailing the shortest distance, and ensuring that he will stay in the breeze (albeit headwinds for the next few of days). The southerly option holds its own risks and the boats may struggle with light winds over the next 24 – 36 hours, however right now they are sailing in good reaching conditions and making progress west. What does look very likely right now is for the two options to converge on Thursday once the fleet are SW of the Azores. Update from onboard – 02.11.10 :
Good evening everybody (as the late night radio talk show host would say!)
The night is beautiful, gentler than the previous night. I slept like a log, in several successive half-hourly “cat-naps” with a manoeuvre here and there between my sleeps. All is well out here, the boat is on top form and her “jockey” is too.
What a crazy race……
Flirtation warning today, with a high pressure system (the Azores High), although I’m not that excited by the idea. I will have to squeeze through somehow...
Please spare a thought for Marcel (Van Triest), my weather router. The flying Dutchman from the Balearics can’t be getting any more sleep than I am at the moment. What a crazy job he has too !
I have to leave you now as I am going to go and check the sail trim
Have a good day!
Sidney
