By reputation, BOOT Düsseldorf is the biggest boat show in the world – 280,000 visitors through the turnstiles in recent years at the German show. The exhibition halls at the Messe site number 17 in total. None of the halls is small and you can burn up a lot of shoe leather walking between them.
ORACLE Racing skipper Jimmy Spithill made the first of two presentations on the stage, entertaining his audience for 30 minutes about the high-energy and high-drama action that the new wingsailed multihills have brought to the America's Cup. What crowds have already seen at the America's Cup World Series events in Cascais, Plymouth and San Diego is just a taster of the AC72 catamarans that will hit the water this July. “They will be twice as long and have 11 crew instead of five as on the AC45, but the power will increase by a factor of five," said Spithill. “The performance will be awesome.”
Complete with a red carpet leading to the stage and a dais from where the winner’s names were kept safe in sealed envelopes until the moment Jimmy read them out, the youngest-ever winner of the America's Cup also played a central role at the European Yacht of the Year awards ceremony, a highlight of the BOOT show. Hosted by Germany’s Yacht magazine and the Delius Klasing publishing house, Yacht’s editor Jochen Rieiker joined Jimmy in presenting the winners. Rieker was Guest Racer aboard ORACLE Racing Spithill at the America’s Cup World Series event in Portugal last August.
