Media outlets in Auckland are reporting Emirates Team New Zealand’s wing sail was damaged today. Both the New Zealand Herald and Sail-World say the incident occurred during the launch process, when the towering 130-foot wing sail is hoisted by crane and lifted above the catamaran before it is attached to the platform for sailing.

It’s a delicate operation that becomes more difficult as the wind speed increases. The wind was recorded as being over 20 knots this afternoon in Auckland harbor.
